As the national association representing communication health professionals, Speech-Language & Audiology Canada (SAC) is committed to highlighting the professions and to raising the profile of communications health in Canada.

As part of our advocacy work, SAC develops evidence-based resources and campaigns that target stakeholders on our key advocacy priorities.

Recent Resources

In support of our ongoing advocacy with the federal government, SAC’s Vote Communication 2021 campaign aims to push communication issues to the forefront and highlight the importance of access to speech-language pathology and audiology services across Canada. At the heart of our Vote Communication 2021 campaign is an extensive social media presence and new resources to promote our three key campaign issues.

In January 2018, SAC released an official statement regarding the use of facilitated communication and rapid prompting method in clinical practice.

On April 2, 2019, the Canadian Infant Hearing Task Force (CIHTF) released their 2019 Report Card on the status of early hearing detection and intervention (EHDI) programs in Canada at a press conference on Parliament Hill.

The 2019 EHDI Report Card exposes an alarming disparity in the hearing health services available to infants and children in Canada. This report card also reveals that little has changed since the CIHTF’s 2014 EHDI Report Card, with Canada once again receiving an overall grade of “insufficient.”

Provincial and Territorial Results
While the CIHTF is pleased to report that Alberta, the Northwest Territories and Yukon have improved from insufficient in 2014 to a sufficient grade in 2019, they are disappointed to report that more than half of the provinces and territories in Canada have received an insufficient grade. In the case of two provinces (New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island), their overall grade fell from sufficient in 2014 to insufficient in 2019.

Past Resources

In June 2017, SAC released two new resource toolkits designed to inform health-care professionals, patients/clients and their loved ones about common communication and swallowing issues at the end of life. Communication health professionals are encouraged to use these resources in their practice and to share them with colleagues, patients/clients and their families.
